Huracán Maria
Cayo Santiago, Isla de los monos (Monkey Island)
Category 5, 250 km/h (155 mph), September 2017
Maria is a symptom of a greater problem and these symptoms, will only be more frequent and intense as the warming oceans and rise in sea levels will continue to afflict coastal regions and the stability of our global climate.
Huracán Maria’s damage, left mass casualties, monumental loss of infrastructure (over $100 billion), and a huge hit to the island’s ecology, especially the forests of Puerto Rico, which house the majority of the island’s biodiversity.
During my time here I will work with rhesus macaque monkeys in Cayo Santiago off the Coast of Humacao, PR, to assess the impacts of Huracan Maria.
I hope to learn from them, as we together have to navigate this time of unprecedented change.
